As you take a look at the exploding Hyper Converged Infrastructure market place and solutions, something looks vaguely familiar. The agility and cost savings of machine virtualization has enabled organizations to save on server, space and power but has created an infrastructure that is complex especially when directing the VM's to store data. The very development of SAN and NAS architectures become inefficient, expensive and costly to maintain. So technology, as it most always does, comes full circle. We now embrace hyper converged machines (servers), which look very much like the architecture of old (servers with direct attached storage), with one huge exception, they are virtualized.
The hyper-converged infrastructure's focal point is the virtual machine, VM. Yet just as virtualization made our storage and data protection practices inefficient, just throwing hyper converged machines into the data center doesn't solve the real issue, which is the workload or application that the hyper-converged device is handling. A focus on solving workload and application performance is as much at the heart of hyper convergence as the VM itself.
